The practice was established by Dr. Howard and then cared for by Dr. Spaulding. Dr. Ashmi Patel took over in 2021 when Dr. Spaulding retired after more than 41 years. Throughout all of those transitions, it has remained a family-oriented practice where patients have always felt at home with the staff and established long-term relationships.
Quilt Eyes — this piece was made by a well-known quilter in Upland who, along with her husband, was a long-time patient. Many of our patients still recognize her work displayed in our office.
Meet your optometrists
Dr. Ashmi Patel, OD
Primary OptometristDr. Patel attended California State University, Fullerton and obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry in 2009. She is certified in Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents and in the treatment of Glaucoma. Dr. Patel enjoys traveling, reading, and live concerts, and looks forward to continuing the long-standing relationships built by Dr. Spaulding.
Dr. Donald Spaulding, OD
Founder & Doctor EmeritusDr. Spaulding attended Michigan State University and graduated valedictorian in 1979 from Southern California College of Optometry. He also practiced at Pacific Eye Institute in Upland. After 41+ years of dedicated service to the Upland community, Dr. Spaulding retired in 2021. He now enjoys reading and fishing in his spare time.

Scheduling & Insurance SpecialistShanun has been in the optical business for 33 years, with 15 of those years right here with our practice. She is a valuable resource for patients on scheduling, insurance questions, and optical needs. In her free time she enjoys exploring new restaurants, crafting, and watching over her new grandchild.

Optician & ReceptionistAna has been our optician and receptionist for 16 years. She enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters, and when not with family she loves walking, baking, cooking, and reading.
